Daphne Winans passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born on Jan. 24, 1939, in Toronto, she was the youngest daughter of the late Violet (Liffiton) and Kenneth C Winans of Montreal.
Daphne moved from Ontario to Cape Breton in 1970. She fell in love with her “favourite island"and felt it was the perfect place to raise her children. She was employed by CBC Cape Breton as a radio and television announcer and radio producer soon after her arrival. She retired in 1991. Daphne loved to write and a few of her short stories and poems were published. She loved animals and nature and was a consistent donator to their causes. She liked to make things and to garden, especially with lavender and lupins. Her favourite flowers were daisies. She loved to dance.
She is survived by her daughters, Randee (Roger) Dann, Ontario, Angela Nicole (Whitney) LaFortune and Fiona Noelle Baby, Powell River, B.C.; her sister Margaret 'Mardy' Winans Elliott, Shelburne, Ont.; and numerous dear Elliott family members; brothers, Milton Peppler, Douglas (Shannon) Alles, George (Lorraine) Alles, John (Wendy) Alles, James Alles; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces and the children and families of the late Robert Jedson Lewis and two sweet cats Minnie Purrl and Peony, survive her.
Besides her parents, Daphne was predeceased by her beloved mother Myrtle Alles, her cherished husband, Robert 'Jeddy' Jedson Lewis, her treasured son, Michael Liffiton Baby, her brother, Charles Peppler, her brothers-in-law, David Canfield Elliott, Edward Lewis, William Lewis and Walter Lewis, as well as a special nephew, Ian Elliott.
In accordance with Daphne’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.
Interment of ashes will take place at Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal at a late date.
In memory of Daphne and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Two Rivers Wildlife Park would be most appreciated.
