Winnifred “Winnie” Isabel Harvey, of McKay Section, Hants County, passed away peacefully at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, August 16, 2014, just two months shy of her 100th birthday. Winnie was born October 12, 1914, in McKay Section, Nova Scotia, to the late Murdoch and Fannie (Dill) Harvey. She lived her life in the home where she was born, Grand Elm Farm. Winnie had a teaching career which spanned nearly fifty years. Winnie began her career as a teacher at the age of 16, teaching children even older than herself. She worked in many one-room schoolhouses in her early career, including McKay School, Falmouth, Musquodoboit Harbour and Newport Corner. She obtained her Teacher's License at the Normal College in Truro and obtained her Bachelor of Arts and Education Degree from Acadia University. Winnie finished her teaching career at the age of 65 following twenty-five years of service at Windsor Elementary School where she taught grade primary and grade 1. In retirement, Winnie remained active in her community, giving her time to the UCW, United Church Choir, Retired Teachers Association and the Newport Jolly Seniors Club. Winnie was known for her wonderful baking and cooking, especially her famous brown bread. Winnie always had a love of the written and spoken word and was a wonderful wordsmith. In her older years she remained a strong-willed woman who valued her independence; she made it a goal to always keep her mind active with crosswords, cryptoquote, scrabble and cards. Throughout her life she had a love of children and always made each of her many nieces and nephews feel special and adored. Winnie is survived by sisters, Ida Mae (late Bruce) Mounce, Irene Harvey and Ella Harvey; brothers, Howard (Beverley) Harvey and Rod Harvey (Linda Benedict); sister-in-law, Mary Harvey She is also survived by nephew, Will (Cathy) Mounce and his children, Tanya (Tyson) Wood, Alisha Mounce, Laura Mounce, Evan Mounce (Laura McLean), Austen Mounce and Lynden Mounce;niece, Melissa Harvey (Kyle Rattray); niece, Carolyn (Ron) Crawford and her daughter Ella; niece, Genevieve Harvey (Tim Rissesco) and her sons, Owen and Neil; niece, Leslie (Ritchie) Hamilton and her sons, Jeremy, Tyus and Trey; niece, Sarah (Garry) Hart and her children, Raymond and Rachael; and grand-nieces, Lilia, Alena and Mayah Wood and Jadyn Mounce. Winnie was predeceased by sister, Annie Harvey; brothers, Harold, Willard, and Herman Harvey. The family would like to express thanks to the caregivers of Northwood Home Care, the nurses at Hants Community Hospital, Bev Lyttle, Palliative Care, Dr. Kilcollins, Dr. Cathryn Smith, and Dr. Kazimiriski for their compassionate and attentive care. Thanks also to Leanne Murphy, a special friend and caregiver. Visitation was 6:30 – 9 pm Tuesday, August 19, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home (902-798-2232), 194 King Street, P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, B0N 2T0. A memorial service was 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2014, in the Newport United Church, Brooklyn. The Rev. Kevin Cox officiated, followed by a reception in the Newport United Church Hall. Interment was in the Riverview Haven Cemetery, Union Corner.
