Sherwood Galvin

Passed on: August 12th, 2014

Sherwood "Ted" Galvin was born December 27, 1926 on NE 8-26-14 to James
and Irene Galvin (deceased). Eldest of two siblings, Adele (deceased) and
Kevin. He passed away peacefully at the Elrose Health Centre on August
12, 2014 with Irene at his side. Ted completed his education through
correspondence for grades 9 and 10, and grades 11 and 12 at the Elrose
school. He entered the U of S and gained a BSA in 1950. Ted met the love
of his life, Marion, and his beautiful nurse captured his heart and their
journey as a couple began. They married in 1948 and raised five
children together. Glen (Jean) Galvin, Judy (Danny) Maclennan, Sara
Dewar, Ian (Linda) Galvin, Irene (Brian) Forgie. Together they gave their
children a grass roots knowledge of a mixed farm environment on SW
17-27-15 W3 until retirement in 1994, of which many grandchildren have
great memories of visiting the farm during that time. Dad loved many
things in life but his wife and his children were first in line. He gave
to the community his time within an Agricultural Advisory Committee, RM
of Monet, Gunworth Wheat Pool Local Committee, Elrose United Church
Committee of Stewards, 4-H Club, Elrose Boy Scouts Group Committee and
also minor ball when the boys were young. He was a member of the Masonic
Lodge of Elrose prior to December 2012. Many hours on the farm were
shared between Dad and Mom. Dad participated fully in the workings of a
home in equal partnership and believed that gender did not dictate what
work needed to be done. Dad loved having cattle on the farm and part of
his joy in farming left when the cattle became too much as he aged.
During that time he was able to discover a different joy in hunting in
the free time he had and many hours were enjoyed in the fall season
walking the native prairie areas. Brian spent much time with Dad sharing
his love of hunting and together they created many memories to be
cherished. Dad was able to enjoy their yard in town after
retirement, and experiment with various types of natural landscaping
techniques he had read about for years but never perhaps had time to
explore. All of us children are avid readers due to his influence and the
natural curiosity for life and exploring it has been passed down to each
of us. He taught us to think about things and question our thoughts
always reaching towards a deeper understanding of every experience that
life gave to us. He was happiest with his feet on the ground and his
hands in the dirt nurturing a new plant to set down roots. Had his
heart not failed, he would be here today, but as with all aspects of
life, it is with love we release Dad to explore and enjoy a new journey.
He leaves to mourn his children and their partners, grand children
and great-grandchildren, his brother, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews
and family across the sea in Ireland of an uncle and numerous cousins.
The memorial service was held at the Elrose Memorial Hall at 2:00 p.m.
on Monday, August 18, 2014 with Mr. Jim MacNaughton officiating.
