Rose Weatherbee
It is with great sorrow that the family of Rose Weatherbee, Amherst, NS, have to say farewell to one of the bright lights in our lives. She was a strong and loving woman who was caring and quick to share a smile, a laugh or words of hope.
Born in Arisaig, Antigonish County on June 7, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Flora Belle and Ronald MacDonald. She was predeceased by brothers Alexander (Sandy), Joseph, Donald and sisters, Sarah and Marie. She is survived by her dear sister, Mary Agnes MacDonald, Amherst.
She was married to Dennis Weatherbee for 53 years, until he passed away in 2005. She is survived by her 5 children: Glen; Jude; Stephen and wife, Effie; all of Amherst; Beth and husband, Steffen; Baie Verte, NB, and Lori, of Halifax. She treasured her grandchildren: Corey Lines; Craig Lines and wife, Jess; Chris Goodwin and his son, Aiden; Tyler Goodwin and wife, Julie McManaman; Alex Weatherbee; and Langille Weatherbee. Family was the focus of Rose’s life and she loved her many nieces and nephews and was willing to be a surrogate mother to all who needed a hand. She will be greatly missed by Boots, her 13-year-old cat and many, many furry grandpets and great-grandpets. Rose has been a caregiver to stray cats for years and welcomed those who chose to move in to the neighborhood.
Rose graduated as a RN from the Halifax Infirmary and worked at Highland View Regional Hospital until she retired. She was passionate about her job and was often recognized for the wonderful care she had given decades before.
She was a volunteer of the local branch of The Kidney Foundation, and more recently, volunteered for many years with the Amherst branch of The Cancer Society. The Terry Fox Run was one of the charities dearest to Rose’s heart and she played an important role in creating the ‘Grandmother’s Walk’, which occurred on the same day.
If you played cards, you would want Rose as your partner – she was a well-known ‘card-shark’. She played Bridge numerous times per week and adored her fellow players – especially the Marsh Hens’ and the Monday Night 2-Table. She cherished the moments spent with these women and often shared the stories of the times with her ‘Bridge girls’.
There will be visiting hours at the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home in Amherst, on Thursday, August 21st from 7-9 pm and a celebration of her life will be held at The Trinity St. Stephen United Church in Amherst on Friday, August 22nd at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Amherst Car-M-A, the group who work to stop the stray cat situation, the Amherst Foodbank or charity of your choice.
The Furlong-Jones Home will have a link on their website to stream the service starting the afternoon on the 22nd, and this will be available to view for the next year.
