It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father, Charles Wilson Gilbert, on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at Harbour View Hospital, Veteran’s Wing, Sydney Mines, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines on Oct. 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Phillip and Catherine (MacNeil) Gilbert. Charles was a member of St. Pius X parish, where he would usher or take up communion every Sunday until his illness.
He worked at the local theatre until he was 19 and enlisted in the military. He served in Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, and Holland. Charles earned several medals during that time; the Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, and War Medal 1939- 1945. Later on he began working in Princess Colliery for 25 years until his retirement. He was well known for his sense of humour, always telling a joke or two.
Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, in which he will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by son, Joe (Jerry) Gilbert and daughters, Cathy Kellett and Sharon MacNeil; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother, Russell (Edna) Gilbert and sister, Shirley (Herbie) Ferdinand.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Annie (Coakley) Gilbert; son, Philip Gilbert; grandson, Joseph Gilbert; granddaughter, Cindy Gilbert; son-in-law, Donald MacNeil; sisters, Christine and Mae and brothers, Alex, Eldon and Joe.
We would like to thank Dr. Wawer and Dr. Ignacio, palliative care, and all the nurses and staff at Harbour View Hospital for your kindness and care.
Visitation for Charles Gilbert will be held in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass to celebrate Charles’ life will be held Monday, at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church (formerly St. Pius X), with Fr. Thomas John officiating.
Donations in Charles’ memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of one’s choice.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
