Mae Garratt

Mae Garratt

Mae passed away on August 26, 2014 at Extendicare in Moose Jaw, SK. Mae was born December 29, 1919 at Bield, MB, the youngest child of parents Lawrence and Maria Sargenia. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Louise and Lucy, brothers Joseph, George, Peter, and beloved husband Paul. Mae is survived by her daughter Sylvia, son William (Rene) and grandchildren Isabel, Janine (Mike), Eric (Rae), Miles, Paul, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mae attended Bield School and was raised on a farm just outside of Bield. She later attended Moose Jaw Bible School where she met the love of her life Paul. She married Paul in 1944 and they raised 2 children. Mae began her married life as the wife of an Estevan area farmer. Paul later became a Free Methodist Minister pastoring and living variously in the communities of Avonlea, SK, Spiritwood, SK, Birch River, MB, and Grandview, MB. In 1961 they returned to Moose Jaw where they remained. Mae was a homemaker first. She loved to cook and bake, spending many happy hours in her kitchen where you’d often find her whistling, singing and doing a tap dance while she worked. A willing worker, throughout the years Mae was variously employed outside the home as a shirt finisher in the laundry, apple picker in the orchard, a substitute teacher, sitter with the sick and elderly, and as a cleaner and baker for several different families. In 1972 she attended STI (now SIAST Palliser Campus) where she successfully completed the commercial cooking class, an accomplishment that meant a great deal to her and enhanced her existing skills. That led her to a cook’s position at Aldersgate College where she enjoyed the students as much as the cooking and baking. Mae was active in her community and her church for many years. The family wish to thank the staff at Iver Main Place in Central Butte, and more recently at Extendicare in Moose Jaw for the wonderful care she received. In lieu of flowers donations could be made to Iver Main Place, 52 3rd Ave W, Central Butte, SK S0H 0T0, or to Extendicare in Moose Jaw, 1151 Coteau St W, Moose Jaw, SK S6H 5G5. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Parkview Funeral Chapel with Reverend Barry Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Blair & Kelly Scott, Funeral Directors. (306) 694-5500. Please sign our online book of condolences at www.parkviewfuneralchapel.ca
