It is with broken hearts that we announce that our mother, Mona (nee Collins) Walker passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sept. 11, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, N.S. on Jan. 9, 1946, Mona was the daughter of the late Bernard and Margaret (MacMullin) Collins.
Mona was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, always placing her family first. Family was the most important thing to Mona. That was evident in her love and passion for her children and grandchildren. Gran loved to spend time with her grands teaching them traditions, gardening, baking and just spending quality time together.
Mona is survived by her two devoted children, Lisa (Geoff) Mohammed and Ian (Dania) and her four pride and joys, Kenzie and Paige Walker, Emma and Sarah Mohammed. Also left mourning are her sisters, Catherine (Gordie), Florence (Cyril), Gertie, Anna, Mary, Bernice, Vera (Vernon), Julie, Margie (Tommy), Pat (Kevin) and Eileen; brothers, Michael (Lucina) and Donald (Cathy).
Mona is now reunited with the love of her life, her beloved husband, Ian and their first born son, Ian Michael Jr. Mona was also predeceased by her brothers, Joe and Bernie, brothers-in-law, Frank, Arthur and Sandy, mother and father-in-law, Angus and Frances Walker.
Mona was a homemaker until she began helping her husband with his growing business until his untimely illness and eventual death. Mona dedicated her life to raising her children. Once her children were older, she then went to work with City Homeworkers where Mona worked as a devoted and caring homecare worker until 2009. She focused her retirement years on spending time with and spoiling her adored four grandchildren.
Mona lived her life with grace and dignity. She was a beautiful, gentle and faithful soul who instinctively knew when someone was in need and she was always there to quietly lend a hand. Mom will be deeply missed and there will be a void in many of our lives with her passing.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, today (Monday, Sept. 15, 2014) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Church, Cabot Street, with Fr. Nnajiofor officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband. There will be a reception after the burial at Chant’s Funeral Home.
