Leo Joseph McGinn

Leo Joseph McGinn

Peacefully, on September 10, 2014, with family at his side, Leo Joseph McGinn passed away at Kelowna General Hospital, Kelowna, B.C., at the age of 81 years.
Leo was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Agnes (nee Callaghan); brothers – Louis and Damien (infant); sisters – Dorothy (James) Tierney, Rita (infant) and Marion (Douglas) Meyers.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Isabelle; children – Carole (Bernie) of Tamworth, N.S.W., Australia, Michael (Martine) of Winnipeg, Paul, Seoul, South Korea, Anne-Marie (Terry) of Vancouver, and five grandchildren (Eryn, Maegan, Kaelin, Derek and Rachael).
Leo was a natural born teacher. He was grounded in the role and the faith of his fathers at his Emyvale School and then to St. Dunstan’s High School, which exemplified the worth of each person. His graduation from St. Dunstan’s University with an Arts Degree propelled him into the formal teaching role in various communities in Manitoba from Thompson in the north to the U.S. border. He was proof of the claim that it takes a village to raise a child. Ending his teaching role as director of curriculum in the Manitoba Department of Education in Winnipeg, Manitoba led to retirement in Kelowna in 1998 where he and Isabelle spent a happy retirement including leisure travel in visiting family and just doing their own thing.
Surviving siblings are Shirley, Patricia (Russell) McInnis of Winnipeg, Brendon (Joan) and Katherine (Don) MacCormac.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Leo’s memory may be made to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation at 2268 Pandosy St., Kelowna, B.C., V1Y 1T2, where Leo was a long term and faithful volunteer at the General.
