Born In: Sydney Mines

Passed in: Sydney Millville
Passed on: September 20th, 2014

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dad, Joseph Adrian Dove, on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, after a lengthy illness, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the youngest son of the late William and Mary (MacGean) Dove.
Dad enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 17, entering the Air Force in the field of communications. His military career would involve travelling and living in many places over the years, including Quebec, Holland as part of NATO; as well as postings in Nova Scotia. He would retire after 25 years of service and return to Cape Breton.
Dad’s dedication to the military would lead him to the Corps of Commissionaires, working at the Radar Base and Victoria Park. He was their longest serving member and received an award for 32 years of service before retiring again, in 2012.
Dad was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and pool player and will be missed at his weekly game with friends. He enjoyed playing cribbage, the guitar and the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered by them for his lengthy tributes while extending birthday wishes on the radio.
Dad was a quiet, fun loving man, strong in faith and known for his kindness and generosity.
He was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Church, Sydney.
He is survived by his daughters, Paula (Clayton) Boutilier, Millville, Brenda, (Daryl) Baxendale, Dalem Lake; his seven grandchildren, Chad (Stephanie), Stephanie (Nick) Bolger, Tyler (Emily), Brendan (Jenna), Jesse, Dana, Molly; his brothers-in-law, James (Rodgerina) Lyle, Sydney Mines, Daniel (Joan) Lyle, Ottawa; sisters-in-law, Delphine and Elaine Dove, both of Sydney Mines, Marlaene (Alex) Russell , North Sydney, Wendy Cook of Sydney, Arlene Lyle, North Sydney, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was predeceased in 1998 by the love of his life for over 39 years, his wife Margie (Lyle) Dove, brothers, William Jr., Gerald, brothers-in-law, Hilton, Gordon, John, sister-in-law, Doreen and a nephew Kenneth Dove.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Myatt, doctors, nurses and support staff, of the Cape Breton Regional hospital for the care and compassion show to their father over the past nine months. Their efforts can be best described as dad would say it “unbelievable.”
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, from St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney.
