Irene BRYDGES

Ada "Irene" Williams Brydges, RN, 98 years of Pictou, NS. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our sister and aunt on Monday, September 22, 2014 in the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Antigonish on June 22, 1916, she was the third of eight children born to the late Aubrey and Lillian (Crittenden) Williams. In 1940 she graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. She returned to Mulgrave and did home nursing and accompanied the local doctor on his house calls. She worked at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow and at St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish where she worked in the nursery for several years. On June 23, 1943 she married the love of her life, Sydney "Syd" C. Brydges. Syd worked for the CN Railway and they lived in Antigonish, North Sydney, Mulgrave, Port Hawkesbury and finally in 1955 they settled in Pictou. When she moved to Pictou she first worked at Greendals Men's and Ladies Wear and later was hired by the VON as a staff nurse. She retired from the VON in April 1973 after 16 years of service. She then went to work at J.W. Priest & Company Retail Shoes and worked there until she retired again at the age of 70. Irene is survived by her sister, Shirley Picken, Hamilton, ON; brother, Gary (Norah) Williams of Qualicum Beach, BC; and several nieces and nephews. To her nieces, Carolyn (John) Fellows, Hilton Head, South Carolina, USA; Sharon (Ray) Lloyd, Ottawa, ON; Claire (Barry) Donovan, Mt. Uniacke, NS and Judith (David) Trumbo, Pictou, NS, she was a second mother and she couldn't have loved them more if they were her own children. She was predeceased by Syd on October 6, 1966; her sisters, Mamie MacKenzie, Mona Higgins and Bernice Williams; and her brothers, Sumner (in infancy) and Earle Williams. Nothing was more important to Irene than her family and she spent her life caring for them, especially for her mother Lillian and her sister Bernice. She cared for them at her home in Pictou for the better part of 30 years. The family wishes to thank Dr. Shirley MacCara, for taking such good care of all the family in Pictou, Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity, the VON, Dr. Farrell and the Palliative Care Team and the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital for taking such excellent and compassionate care of Irene. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou, on Thursday, September 25, 6:00-8:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at Pictou United Church, on Friday, September 26 at 11:00 am, with Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. Family flowers only. If it is your wish to make a donation in Irene's memory, please consider donations to Pictou United Church, Trinity United Church Mulgrave, The Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital, or to a charity of your choice.
