It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Madeline Carol Postlewaite on Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, in the An Cala, Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a brief and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on Jan. 23, 1945, in Sydney, Madeline was the daughter of the late William and Annie (Karyluk) Worobel.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gus in 2003; brother, Michael Worobel in 2013; sisters-in-law, Mary Worobel and Brenda Postlethwaite; brothers-in-law, Wayne Dawe and Eric Postlethwaite and mother and father-in-law, Eric and Nellie (Dean) Postlethwaite.
Madeline will be sadly missed by her children, Michelle (Glenn) Campbell, Kandra (Robert) Mercer and Gus (Cathy) and grandchildren, Jakob, Tanner, Bobbie-Anne, Ceilidh, Connor and Danica. She is also survived by her siblings, Stephanie (Wayne) Dawe, Anna (John) Dooley, Ollie (Pat) Randazzo, Alex (Ellen) Worobel, Donald Worobel and Walter (Mitzi) Worobel; sister-in-law, Eleanor Worobel; and several nieces and nephews.
“Ma” was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and baba. She was a caregiver to her husband and mother during their lengthy illnesses. For several years, she was employed with the Cape Breton Regional School Board, retiring in 2004 and was also employed at the Gaum Clinic in Whitney Pier. Madeline was a member of Holy Ghost parish and the Ukrainian Women’s Club. She was an avid reader, enjoyed solving puzzles and playing cards, especially tarabish and crib. In her younger years, she loved to bowl. Ma had a soft spot for animals, especially her cat, Tinkerbell.
The family would like to thank the staff of 4B and the An Cala Unit of the CBRH, as well the many volunteers who gave their time providing excellent care and compassion to Madeline.
As per her wishes, there will be no visitation and a private family service will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. A celebration of Madeline’s life will take place from 12-2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 146 Kennedy Ave., Sydney.
Memorials may be made to the An Cala, Palliative Care Unit at the CBRH or the Canadian Cancer Society.
“Ma, there is a card game waiting for you. Enjoy!”
