Surrounded by her loving family and friends, our beautiful Aunt Jo peacefully took her saviour's hand on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, at the An Cala Palliative Care unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Dominion, Josephine was the second youngest daughter of the late Giovanni and Irene (Vallas) Dezagiacomo.
Aunt Jo worked at Viho’s Sweets, Glace Bay in her younger years. Later she moved to Philadelphia where she was employed at Jefferson Medical Center as an admitting secretary. It was in Philadelphia that she met and married the love of her life, the late Ralph Petrella. Following her retirement she returned to Cape Breton to be close to family and friends.
Josephine was an active member of Immaculate Conception parish, serving as eucharistic minister. She was also instrumental as a founding member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Josephine was an avid reader and volunteered at both the Glace Bay Community Hospital and Glace Bay General Hospital with Books on Wheels program. She loved gardening. But mostly, she will be remembered as a very kind, gentle and compassionate lady who loved her family.
Besides her parents, Aunt Jo was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Petrella, her sisters, Marie (Fred) McIvor, Cleo (Rod) MacIntyre, brothers, Dominico (Egle) Dezagiacomo, Mike (Chris) Dezagiacomo, Agustus (Dorothy) Dezagiacomo, nieces, Polly (Charlie) Nearing, Theresa McIvor, Carol Ann Dezagiacomo and brother in law, Raymond MacPhee.
Surviving is the last member of her immediate family, her loving sister and best friend, Katherine (Kay) MacPhee. Also left to mourn her passing are her three nieces and constant companions, Cathy (Jim) Hill, Kendra Hill (Trevor MacNeil), Anne Marie Poirier and very special friend, Ceci MacNeil. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
A special thank you to Aunt Jo’s niece, Wendy Eldridge for her compassion and care. Thank you to the staff of Glace Bay and CBRH emergency room, An Cala Palliative Care Unit and Dr. Jamie MacLean for their outstanding care.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Aunt Jo’s memory to An Cala, CBRH or St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Dan Boudreau is Thursday, 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Reception to follow in the lower level of the church.
