John Matthew  LeBlanc

It is with deep sadness that the family announce John Matthew LeBlanc’s move to his eternal resting place. John passed away on Oct. 13, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Mill Creek on Oct. 18, 1940, he was the son of the late Garfield and Mary Ellen (Pendergast) LeBlanc. John gew up in Sydney Mines, NS, graduated from Notre Dame School and attended Xavier Junior College. He then worked with the Royal Bank of Canada in Baddeck and in Weymouth. In 1966 he received his teaching certification from Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro, Ns. His teaching career spanned 29 years and included working with the Inuit youth in Sugluk, Quebec and mainly with students experiencing hearing loss in both Fredericton, NB and Amherst, NS with APSEA. In 1982, while on Sabbatical, John obtained his BA from St. Thomas University.

John lived most of his adulthood in Amherst while always making his way to Cape Breton for Christmas and a part of the summer. John developed, cultivated and maintained many long term friends throughout his life some of whom were: Donnie & Beverley, Linda, Marilyn, John & Judy, June, Harold & Willie, Murinda, Bill & Marie and many others. He was Godfather to several children and being a man of great faith felt privileged to do so. John loved to entertain his family and friends, play games, cook and set up his new homes. He was involved in the 50+ Club in Amherst and could often be found helping or visiting the elderly in his community, He moved to Harbourstone Enhanced Care in 2013.

John is survived by his brother, Alex (Beverley) LeBlanc, Bras d’Or; sisters Anne (Harold) Meehan, Willoughby Hills, Ohio; Selica (Gregor) McPherson, Lingan; Joan (Ian) MacDonald, Bedford, and 16 nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Barry LeBlanc, his sister Sheila Day (Reilly) and his nephews Michael LeBlanc and John Reilly.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 3 p.m with Deacon Leo Penny officiating with a luncheon to follow. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines following the luncheon. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. In lieu of flowers, Donations in John’s memory can be made to the Palliative Care Unit, An Cala.
