Jane Townsend Jane Townsend

Born In: Dartmouth

Passed in: Dartmouth
Passed on: October 21st, 2014

Jane Elizabeth (Gladwin) Townsend - After a courageous one-year battle with illness, Jane passed away at her Dartmouth home, on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, members of her family at her side, and her final wish that her beloved shih tzu dogs George and Gracie be with her at the end. Born in Dartmouth 68 years ago, she was the only daughter of Wynyard “Joe” Gladwin and the late Ruth (Mitchell) Gladwin. She graduated from Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth in 1964, then attended the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing in New Glasgow, where she graduated in 1967. She later completed the nursing continuing care course at St. Francis Xavier University. While in training, she met Hugh Townsend and they married in 1967, their “centennial project.” She was a registered nurse for 40 years, including two years at the Aberdeen. When she and Hugh moved to Dartmouth in 1969, she nursed at the Nova Scotia Hospital for a short time, and was then on the staff of Dartmouth General Hospital for 38 years, primarily in the emergency department and recovery room. She was an extremely devoted and highly respected nurse throughout her career, caring greatly for the many, many patients she helped. Jane also served on the provincial executive of the Nova Scotia Emergency Nurses Association for a number of years. She was also a very devoted mother and grandmother. In her spare time, her favourite hobby was quilting, making everything from large quilts, to baby quilts, to wall hangings and other items. Upon completion of each item, she got much satisfaction from giving her beautiful works to friends and relatives. She remained a long-time member of the Northumberland Quilt Guild in Pictou County and was a member of the Mayflower and Mariners quilt guilds in Dartmouth. Jane loved everything around her, and in recent years she collected wonderful memories from trips to New Zealand and Italy. Her unbelievable strength through her illness was typical of the way she faced life's challenges, her great sense of humour never weakening. Left to mourn, besides her father in Kentville, who turned 95 on Monday, and Hugh, her loving husband of 47 years, are two sons, Gavin (You-Hui Kim) Townsend, Toronto, and Graham (Patti Hackett) Townsend, Cole Harbour; one daughter, Charlotte (Fayeque) Townsend-Rahman, Toronto; four grandchildren, Claire and Anna Townsend, Cole Harbour; Isla and Cade Townsend-Rahman, Toronto; one brother, Gerald Mitchell (Jose Van Kippersluis) Gladwin, Greenfield, Kings County; sister-in-law, Barbara (Townsend) Tuck, East River, Lunenburg County; cousins, Ruth Annett Boutilier, Dartmouth, Robert (Alice) Annett, Cole Harbour; Sheldon (Sharon) Mitchell, Martin's Brook, Jill Mitchell (Mike) O'Reilly and Phyllis Mitchell Ronayne, both in St. John's, N.L. She was predeceased by her mother two years ago; Uncle Gerald Gladwin; Aunt Violet (Mitchell) Annett and Uncle Amos Annett, and Uncle Bob Mitchell. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at Woodlawn United Church, 57 Woodlawn Road, Dartmouth, officiated by Rev. Phillip Kennedy, at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 25. A reception will be held in the church hall following the service. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Woodlawn United Church. Cremation has taken place and interment will be at the Heritage Oak Columbarium adjacent to Christ Church in downtown Dartmouth. Arrangements entrusted to White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. The family would like to especially thank the VON team that was so helpful and caring after she returned home from hospital. In her final days, Jane left this message (author unknown): “In the blink of an eye, everything can change. So forgive often and love with all your heart. You may never know when you may not have that chance again.” On-line condolences may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
