Mary McIsaac

Born: April 2nd, 1922

Passed on: October 22nd, 2014

After a very full and well-lived life, our cherished mum, grandma, and great-grandma completed her earthly journey on October 22, 2014. Born April 2, 1922 to Paddy and Elizabeth Callaghan, she learned early in life to work hard, connect with nature, enjoy each day and practise the foundations for a deep Christian faith. On July 1, 1947, she married Leo McIsaac (deceased 2003) and, to quote Mum, they were "blessed with 10 healthy children": Anita (Bob McQueen), Mary Beth (deceased at age 9), Leona (late Norbert Moran), Alan (Joanne), Paul (Shirley), Ian (Janet), Kevin (Jeanne), Guy (Natalie), Dale (Ann-Marie), and Karen (Larry Kirkland). Her family grew to include 31 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Ethel Keenan, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Martha MacIsaac, Mary Sullivan, Alex MacIsaac, Cy and Roberta MacIsaac, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Anna Callaghan, as well as 2 brothers and 2 sisters in childhood. Mary was the consummate teacher, with family and friends, in her community organizations as well as the formal school system. Her files and bookshelves were filled with information. She experienced the 10-grades-in-one-classroom educational setting, as well as the transition to schools with one grade per classroom. Learning was important to her and she wanted everyone to have the opportunity to succeed. She was known to insist on proper grammar, pronunciation, and penmanship. She had a competitive spirit as well, which we saw in her baking competitions, lawn bowling tournaments, and rose shows. She and Dad enjoyed their gardening, travel, and bridge in later years. A journey with Parkinson's caused her to move from the farm and home she loved in Mermaid to Park West Lodge, where she was lovingly cared for these past four years. Her family invites you to join them at Hillsboro Funeral Home in Stratford, where visitation hours will be held on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Stratford at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 24. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the PEI Parkinson Society. Completion of funeral arrangements entrusted to Hillsboro Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made to hillsborofuneral@eastlink.ca or www.peifuneralcoops.com.
