Clifton, John Daniel, 96, of Beaver Meadow, Antigonish County, passed away on October 22, 2014, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Daniel MacKenzie and Laura (Johnson) Clifton. John was raised by his grandparents John and Emily (MacLeod) Clifton in Thorburn, and he adored them fully. After working in the woods and on farms locally, around 1940 he joined the Royal Montreal Regiment. He returned home and married Margaret Greene in 1941. Thereafter, he worked as a crane operator in the Artillery Shell Plant in Trenton, for MacBean Mine in Thorburn, in the trucking business, and finally for Irving Oil, retiring in 1982. Well-known wherever he went, he was a longtime member of the Pictou County Antique Car Club and Scotia Lodge in Westville, and a member of Moore Lodge 17, IOOF, Thorburn for 68 years. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Margaret; daughters Margaret "Peggy" (David) Kennedy, Salisbury, NB, Patricia "Patsy" (late James) Bowen, Hopewell, NS, son Daniel "Danny" (Joanne), Beaver Meadow; grandchildren, Heather (Martin) Montplaisir, Christine (Mark) Babineau, Jeff (Cheryl) Young, Lisa Young, Troy Young, Jason (Tracy) Bowen, Gina Clifton (Brian Eadie), Jonathan (Jennifer) Clifton, Brian (Karen) Clifton, Justin (Kristy) Clifton; step-granddaughter Cathy Walker; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; step-sister, Florence Mattingly, Warrington, Virginia; and sisters-in-law, Hazel Jones, Dartmouth, and Betty Taylor, Florida and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by one grandson in infancy and two step-sisters. Visitation will be held Friday from 7 to 9pm and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in the C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:00pm in St. James United Church with Reverend Peter Smith presiding. Burial in Glen Bard Cemetery.
