SHAW, Michael Alexander ‘Mike’ -63, of Halifax and formerly of Pictou, passed away at home October 28, 2014 after a brief illness. Born in Pictou, he was a son of the late Walter MacLaughlin ‘Lauchie’ and Mary Jane (Walker) Shaw. He is survived by his friend and companion, Ronald Denton; brother, Theodore Shaw, Pictou; sister, Sarah ‘Sadie’ O’Hearn (John), Pictou. He is also survived by Ruth Denton, Bill Denton (Bev), Marilyn Ireland (Dennis), Robert Denton (Krista); and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Catherine and Alex Walker and paternal grandparents, William and Rena Shaw. Educated in Pictou schools, he was a graduate of Mack Business College in Kentville, and was employed with Michelin Tire in his early years. He went on to train at Camp Hill Hospital as a nursing orderly, where he was employed until 1988. Mike then worked as an Education Program Assistant (E.P.A.) in Fall River and Halifax until his retirement due to health issues. Volunteering was very important in Mike’s life. He devoted time to St. Vincent de Paul Society, taking seniors on excursions, was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Order and served on the Board of Trustees for Seaview Cemetery. More recently he attended the Acute Brain Injury Program, and after completion he went on to speak of his own experiences. He was an active member of St. Joseph / Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Halifax. Mike’s greatest devotion was to St. Anne, he organized 22 Pilgrimages to St. Anne-de-Beaupre in Quebec. When unable to continue with pilgrimages he visited the shrine regularly on his own. Family history and background was very important to him. He spent the last 25 years researching his own family tree and assisting others to get started with theirs. Mike was a people person. He had a great gift of making people of all cultures and backgrounds feel very welcome. He had a special talent for recognizing when someone was in need of a helping hand, and always had an open heart, arms and ear for all his nieces, nephews and godchildren. Visitation will be held Saturday November 1st from 6 to 8 PM at Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Church, 6032 Normandy Drive, Halifax, and Sunday, November 2nd, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at McLaren Funeral Home, 246 Faulkland Street, Pictou. Funeral Mass will be held Monday, November 3rd, at 11 AM from Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou, with Father Peter MacDonald and Father Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial will be in Seaview Cemetery. A reception will follow in Stella Maris Parish Hall. Family flowers only please. Donations in his memory may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Knights of Columbus, the Food Bank or a charity of your choice.
