Douglas Taylor Mingo

Douglas Taylor Mingo, passed away on November 8, 2014 at the home of his daughter Doris in Penrose, Colorado. Doug was born May 5th, 1927 in Denmark, Colchester County, Nova Scotia Canada. He was the eldest child of Leslie and Florence (Archibald) Mingo. Growing up, Doug longed for the sense of travel and adventure, hatching a plan to join the Merchant Marines at age 16 during WWII. However, when his father Leslie discovered and put a stop to the plan, Doug refocused his gaze on the Canadian North Woods. In 1950 after making his way to Edmonton Alberta, Doug found and responded to a newspaper ad “Wanted, young man to learn the fur trade-On the job training with the Hudson’s Bay company Fur Trade Department”. Doug became a fur trader with the Hudson’s Bay Company on the Great Slave Lake in Canada’s Northwest Territories. Continuing his love for the outdoors, Doug’s next adventure found him employed by the Ontario lands and Forest Service. During this time he met Gabriella Bock who fled to Canada during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. They were married in 1957 and together had three children. The next adventure took him and the family to the TransCanada Pipeline Company in Ignace, Ontario. In 1968 Doug transferred to the Great Lakes Pipeline Company in Hallock, MN, USA where he raised his family. In 1982 Doug left Minnesota and returned to his roots in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, Canada. Still seeking adventure Doug found himself in Mount Pearl Newfoundland where he met and married Dorothy Percy. Doug and Dorothy shared a love of square dancing and travel and spent 15 years dancing and traveling throughout Canada, Europe and the United States. On several occasions they drove their motorhome across Canada and the USA to visit his children and grandchildren in Minnesota and Colorado, even driving so far as to return to the Northwest Territories to visit his original adventure in the far north. Following Dorothy’s passing Doug returned to Tatamagouche and alternated his time between his childhood home and Colorado. Doug enjoyed all things outdoors: hiking, ice skating, skiing and gardening. He loved dancing, traveling, and listening to Maritime folk music. He never met a stranger, always ready with the cheery “Hello, how are you doing?” and was loved by family and friends. Doug’s glass was always half full and he looked for the best in everything and everyone. He is survived by his daughter Doris (Brian) Petro of Penrose, CO, sons Martin of Rush City, MN and Henry (Sonya) Mingo of Alexandria, MN, three grandchildren: Logan (Adeline) Petro, Maggie (Dustin) Petro and Tyson Mingo: Sisters, Doris Fage of Amherst, Nova Scotia, Nan Grant of Hamilton, Ontario and many close friends and relatives.
