Passed in: Southside Boularderie
Passed on: November 20th, 2014

With broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of Leo Richard Ryan, of Southside Boularderie, who died at home on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014.
Dad was born Feb. 12, 1946 in Sydney. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Dad was a graduate of vocational school in Sydney and worked for over 30 years as an electrician at the Sydney Steel Plant. While attending vocational school, he played hockey and ran track and field. He grew up in Whitney Pier, but Southside Boularderie would become his home after marrying Anne in 1969.
Dad was a man of great faith, who served both St. Joachim and the parish of St. Joseph with pride. He served on the St. Joachim Parish Council, and served for many years on the St. Joseph Bereavement team, alongside his wife. Together Mom and Dad worked as a team on many church projects, and devoted much of their time and energy into making St. Joachim the special place it is.
Dad loved fishing, harness racing, and playing cards, which he was baptized into by his in-laws, the late Hughie Angus and Flora Jobes. Many hours were spent around the kitchen table in classic battles of auction and high-low which Dad thoroughly enjoyed. He also loved the peaceful jaunts to his favourite fishing holes.
From a young age Dad could be found at Cape Breton Sports Centre, where he learned how to jog, train and care for race horses. He was the proud owner of the trotter Spencer Rapid in the late 60s and would remain involved in harness racing throughout his life. He relished his annual trips to Old Home Week every August since 1986 for the Gold Cup and Saucer, where he lived and breathed the sport he loved so much. Anne’s illness this summer meant Dad missed Old Home Week for the first time in 28 years, a tribute to the relationship he and Mom had. Dad loved going to Northside Downs as well, attending the races weekly and stopping by the barns to chat with his friends.
Dad previously volunteered as an umpire with the Boularderie Little League and enjoyed taking his children to 4-H, baseball, dancing, and concerts. He was so proud of his family's accomplishments.
Leo is survived by his son, Shane (Sheri), North Sydney; daughters, Laurie, Sydney Mines and Eleanor, who he provided terrific care for, at home, along with his grandchildren, Brandon, Ayden, Nolan, and Sam.
Besides his parents, Leo was predeceased by his loving wife, Anne (Jobes) Ryan, on Nov. 13, 2014.
Visitation for the late Leo Richard Ryan will take place on Monday. Nov. 24, 2014, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joachim Church, Southside Boularderie, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating.
Donations in Leo’s memory may be made to the Haley Street Adult Services Centre.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
