It is with deep sadness we, the family, announce the passing of Peggy Rudderham on Nov. 18, 2014, at the Cove Guest Home, where she resided the past seven years. Peggy was formerly from West Street, Whitney Pier.
Born in Whitney Pier, Peggy was the daughter of the late Stephen A. and Jessie (Cash) Gillis. Peggy was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Rudderham; son, John Rudderham; brothers, Johnnie, Danny, Mickey, Paddy and Robert; sisters, Annie Frobese, Theresa Gillis, Mae Clarke and Kay Wall.
Peggy is survived by family, daughters, Deanna (Alfie) MacNeil and Roberta (Max) Hickman; son, Keith (Margaret) Rudderham and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Rudderham. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Eileen Gillis and Tillie Gillis; cousin, Ronald Mullaly; grandchildren, Laureen, Gail, Verna, Troy, Matthew, Lindsay, Julia, Mark, Linda, Katie, Craig and Shauna; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Morgan, Sarah, Chelsea, Mark, Hayden, Avery, Owen, Jeremy, Margot, Lance, Olivia, Jack and Margo; great-great-grandchildren, Zander and Ava; also special people in her life, Marilyn MacIntyre, David Gillis, Terry Usher and Delores Campbell; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Peggy lived a full rich life contributing to her community in many ways. She wrote for the Dishpan Parade Radio Show. She was a member of Holy Redeemer parish: St. Gerard’s Guild, church linens, vestments and parish council. Peggy was a charter member of Laubach Each One Teach One and T.S. McLanders Divisional Officer. She volunteered with palliative care, cancer and heart fund. Peggy was involved with St. John Ambulance, serving sister life member, for she was the first female First Aid instructor in Cape Breton and drove the ambulance. Peggy was part of the register of voters for Ward 5, City of Sydney, and managed the Pier Drugstore.
Peggy also took time for herself, for she enjoyed skating, line dancing, painting and writing humorous poems, for many were published in the Cape Breton Mirror. She loved flowers, birds, nature and her dog D.O.G. Peggy was an inspiration to all of us.
Funeral mass for the late Peggy Rudderham will be celebrated on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. A reception following the mass will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Donations in memory of Peggy may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Our heartfelt thank you goes to the staff at the Cove Guest Home and special friend, Alice Hynes, for the wonderful love and care given to our mother. We will be forever grateful.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
