GREENWOOD, Pictou County – Herbert Warren Holmes, age 92, of 23 Townsend Avenue, New Glasgow, formerly of Greenwood, Pictou County, passed away at home on November 25th.
He was a son of the late Andrew and Charlena (MacIntosh) Holmes of MacPhersons Mills, Pictou County.
He is survived by his wife of over 71 years, Myrtle (Meikle) Holmes; daughters Lois Fraser (David Smith), Greenhill, Pictou County and Verna Holmes (Mark McKindsey), Halifax, as well as four grandchildren: Joey MacIntosh, Woodstock, New Brunswick; Miranda Fraser, New Glasgow; Brittany Fraser, New York and Mitchell Fraser, Greenwood, Pictou County.
Also surviving, are sister-in-law, Pearl Holmes, New Glasgow and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters: Etta (Gordon) Rainey, Chrissie (George Murray), Jessie Holmes, Lena (John Bryden), Elizabeth (George Brighton); brothers: Alex, T.D. and Victor, in infancy.
He was a hardworking man, who farmed his family farm in his early years. He then co-formed Holmes & Fraser Contracting and worked in the pulping industry until his retirement. He was a former adherent of Knox Presbyterian Church in Blue Mountain and a member of Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn. He was actively involved in the restoration of the MacPherson’s Mills Cemetery.
As a loving husband, father and grandfather, he will be dearly missed by all for his quiet and generous ways.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, November 28th in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 29th in Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn with Rev. Jeff Lackie officiating. Burial will be in the MacPherson’s Mills Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall.
Donations may be made to the MacPherson’s Mills Cemetery or a charity of choice.
