Julia Pickard

Passed on: November 25th, 2014

(April 15, 1936 - November 25, 2014) The world became a little less colorful as one of its most beautiful cherished spirits passed peacefully away on November 25th, 2014. Julia Pickard (nee O'Connell) was born in Wishaw, Scotland April 15th 1936. Predeceased by Loving husband Chris and cherished daughter Katie, and by parents Edward and Elizabeth O'Connell, brothers Michael and Lindsay and sisters Rose, Sr. Mary Clement and baby Mathilda. Leaving to mourn are her children Elizabeth (Mike Kean), Anne Pickard-Vaandering (Julian), Christopher, and Michael (Leigh Ann); 11 grandchildren Emily (Jared), Sam (Murrissa), Eli, Lis (Cailen), Gabriel, Kyle, Sophie-Rose, Madeline, Ryan, Molly and Grace; sisters Anne O'Connell and Elizabeth Owens; and a multitude of relatives and friends in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Scotland, Ireland, England and around the world. Julia was born in Scotland, taught and lived in Ireland and built a wonderful life and legacy in Newfoundland. She was a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art and received a post-graduate degree in Art Education from the Limerick School of Art. Julia is often known first as an artist, but she was a remarkable teacher, a coach, a community advocate, an art adjudicator, a volunteer, a mom and grandmother and a dear friend. She was chair of the Arts and Letters Committee for many years, sat on the Board at the LSPU Hall, Eastern Edge Gallery and The Rooms. Julia was an artist in the kitchen and made simply the best pie pastry (ask anyone). Julia instilled many things in her children, grandchildren and students - think creatively, find beauty and make a difference. Thank you to all who have loved our mom and shared in her life. Special thank you to the many special caregivers, friends and family who have been here for her during these difficult days. We will picture her now hand in hand in hand with her beloved Chris and daughter Katie in a summer field of flowers from one of her paintings. Visitation will be at Caul's Funeral Home on Lemarchant Road on Thursday, November 27th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm and on Friday, November 28th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial to be held at The Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Saturday November 29th at 9:30 am. Inurnment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted and donations can be made to the Anna Templeton Centre or a charity of your choosing.

Wildflowers dance and bow to breeze
In meadows lush with green soft grass
Daisies whispering through the Leas
Welcome home sweet bonnie lass.
