Kevin MacNeil

Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: November 27th, 2014

Kevin MacNeil, 76, of Sydney River, passed away on Nov. 27, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a short illness.
He was the youngest of five children of the late George and Gertrude (Gillis) MacNeil.
Kevin is survived by his son, Andrew (Patrick); fuzzy grandbabies, Maggie, Minerva and Martha; sister, June MacKeigan; brother, Henry (Greta); sister-in-law, Helen, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Known to most as a prominent union leader, or troublemaker to some, Kevin held numerous jobs in a variety of fields. He was everything from a steel worker, building inspector, dog catcher, meter man, and a national representative for the C.U.P.E over his many years Kevin worked with the Boys & Girls Club, was a member of the Kennel Club, and the Nova Scotia Labour Congress, a parachuting fanatic, and an avid N.D.P supporter. On top of everything he has done for the community he was the parade marshall for many Santa Claus parades and sat on a great deal of arbitration boards.
Dad always fought for what he believed in, never backed down and encouraged others to do the same! Picket lines were walked and signs were made in all hopes of change, equality, and better pay.
When Dad was not tending to the pool (that he never swam in), he could be found “fixing” computers, playing solitaire, and always finding something for me to do. He also enjoyed a good stiff drink with the neighborhood men as they sat and listened as he recalled labour events. He educated so many on their rights and was always willing to give advice and help where he could.
Three years ago, Kevin lost the love of his life, soul mate and rock, his wife Sandra. He was predeceased by three children in infancy; brother, Gerry; sister, Ruth Tutty; brothers-in-law, Glen Tutty and Doug MacKeigan.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel, 564 Alexandra St., on Monday, Dec. 1, 2014 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.
A special thanks to all the staff of 4C of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their amazing care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Club Building Fund, Whitney Pier. This is a community organization that Kevin felt strongly about.
