John Albert Mahon

John Albert Mahon 1938-2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Albert Mahon of Halifax and Great Village. Born in Halifax in 1938, he was the son of Jean and Albert Mahon of Halifax. John is survived by his wife, Audrey and his three children, Leslie Anne (Bateman), Michael Stuart Mahon and James Albert Mahon and three grandchildren, Carin and Matthew Mahon, and Adam Bateman. Sister and brother, Nancy (Bourque) and Charles Mahon and their families.
John called two places home: most of his working life was spent in Halifax, and Great Village was where his heart was, always.
The city boy worked for Texaco Canada in Eastern Passage. He played gentleman’s hockey at SMU and was a life member of the Mayflower Curling Club. He always believed in being involved, and whether organizing activities or supporting them, his friends and teammates knew they could count on him to get the job done.
John was a special person who enjoyed meeting the friends that he had known in his school days at QEH, weekends at Queensland Beach, winters at the Mayflower Curling Club, and, in recent years, at Jenny’s.
The house in Great Village, and the Scrabble Hill woods and blueberry field overlooking the Bay of Fundy, were where he put his industry to work after retiring from the refinery after more than 30 years of dedicated employment.
John was awarded the Star of Courage by the Governor General of Canada for bravery. In 1976 John and neighbors Dee Crawley, Charles MacDonald and fireman Ernie Boutilier rescued a two-year old child who was trapped in a house fire on Westmount Street in Halifax.
John’s tenacious nature and generous spirit was easily shared by John with those who depended on his strength and steadfastness. We will miss him on the rinks, in the company of friends, and in his kitchen in Great Village.
Special and sincere thanks to all of his VON nurses whose compassion helped us so much when support was needed.
