Francis 'Geekers' MacLean

Francis 'Geekers' MacLean

Born In: New Waterford

Passed on: December 15th, 2014

Dec. 15, 2014 was a very sad day for our family as God called home our beloved Francis 'Geekers', a caring husband to Evelyn (Roper), amazing father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Francis was born and raised in New Waterford, the son of Frank and Jessie (Kavanaugh) MacLean.
Anyone who knew Francis was drawn in by his infectious smile and jolly laugh. His generous spirit was his greatest gift to both our family and the community. He was a true gentleman and role model in the community of New Waterford.
Francis attended Mount Carmel School and later attended St. F.X University. He returned home to join his father in his business, Hi-Fi Novelty — a business he ran for many years after the passing of his father, Frank. With an entrepreneurial spirit, he also owned several other successful businesses, and he shared his success with everyone he loved. A passion for politics also followed Francis throughout his life and he played a large role in many political campaigns in our community.
Francis was Ward 2 councillor in the town for nine years. Through his role as councillor, he was able to touch many people and truly fulfill his passion for the people within the community of New Waterford, a town he deeply loved.
An original member of the New Waterford Strands basketball team, Francis was passionate about sports throughout his life. He was co-owner of the New Waterford Jets hockey team, a proud sponsor of the New Waterford Hi-Fi Hawks baseball team, and he also enjoyed playing a round of golf with friends, as well as curling and bowling in his younger years. Every Friday night you could find Evelyn and Geekers at the KOC playing darts with friends for more than 30 years. But more than anything, his favourite pastime was attending dances with Evelyn or dancing with her at home in the kitchen.
He was an honorary life member of the New Waterford Rotary Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years and was a past grand knight. Francis was so honoured to be a nominee for the New Waterford Senior of the Year last year. He was also involved with the Special Olympics for many years; as well, Francis was a long-time member of the parish council and the New Waterford Credit Union board. But when it came to community, Francis took great pride in his role with the Combined Christmas Giving Committee. Christmas in our house is the best day of the year and he wanted to ensure that everyone in the community could have the same.
Among many interests — nothing could dull the passion that Francis held for his family. His children and grandchildren were the “light of his life”, and his grandchildren will forever remember him for his bright spirit, and that he never missed an occasion big or small.
Francis is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Evelyn (Roper) and his children, Francis (Kim), Darren (Lorna), Lorne (Sherry) and Cynthia (Rardy). He will be deeply missed and loved by his eight grandchildren, Jenni (Chris), Mitchell, Kelsea, Evan, Samantha, Adriana, Troy and Jessica, as well as his step-grandchildren, Courtney and Mark. He is also survived by his sisters, Christina and Maryena (Mike); sisters-in-law, Midge (Bill) and Rose (Alex), along with nieces and nephews.
Francis was predeceased by his parents, grandparents, brother, Stephen in infancy, and loving sister, Anne, who generously gave of herself so that we could have him for 15 years after donating a kidney to Francis. He was also predeceased by his best friend and sister-in-law, Al and Kay Dwyer.
Francis loved time spent with his family, summers spent in East Bay, and playfully joking with family and friends. He will be remembered for both his humility and kindness. He gave of himself to others and never asked for anything in return. His legacy to our family is his strong morals and big heart.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014 from 6-9 p.m and a funeral mass will take place on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014 at St. Leonard’s Parish in New Waterford at 11 a.m. with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. A luncheon will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall immediately following the funeral mass. Members of the KOC will assemble for a prayer service at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honour of our beloved Francis to New Waterford Combined Christmas Giving at ccgnw@gmail.com or phone Shelly McLellan at 902-862-6142.
