Ignatius McCormick

Passed on: December 19th, 2014

A quiet man, a kind man, a gentleman
Surrounded by family, Ignatius McCormick passed away in the manner in which he lived his life: quietly and peacefully on Dec. 19, 2014. Although Naish was a minimalist, choosing to live simply, there were no boundaries to the depths of his kindness. He gave largely to charity, to friends in need, and true to his nature, he always gave quietly.
His own children often did not know the extent of his charity as Naish found joy in the act rather than the recognition. He also found joy in his daily walks and sought guidance to live a life of goodness from his steadfast faith.
Naish worked hard to provide a comfortable life for his family as a proprietor of several businesses over the years. He loved children and took extreme pride in his role as a grandfather. During retirement, Naish and Shirley escaped the harsh Canadian winters and travelled south to Florida where sunshine and friends awaited them.
Naish suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in his later years and received exceptional and loving care at Seaview Manor.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley, his children, Lee (Paddy) Gillis, Diane (Paul) McNeil and Robert (Annette) McCormick; his grandchildren, Gregory, Lauren, Alex, Jaime, Robyn, Leah, Jack and his remaining siblings, Audrey (Wolfgang) Bruckert, Stephen (Eileen) McCormick and Myles (Shirley) McCormick.
He was predeceased by his parents, John Edward and Sarah McCormick, his brothers, Daniel, John, Eric, Joesph and Edward and his sisters, Mary, Carmelita, Jeanette and Delores (in infancy).
In lieu of flowers, Naish would be honoured to be remembered by a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or the Glace Bay Food Bank.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Church in Glace Bay with the Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will follow in St. Eugene's Cemetert.
