Edwin "Ted" Sollows

Born In: Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada
Born: October 31st, 1921

Passed on: January 12th, 2015

SOLLOWS, Edwin “Ted” Graves – age 93, was born in Yarmouth, on October 31, 1921, son of Edwin Hammond and Ida Beulah (Graves) Sollows. He left us at 8:45 P.M. on January 12, 2015. Ted loved the water, and taught sailing at Lake Milo in his early years. He interrupted his high school education when duty called and he served as a radar operator in Newfoundland during World War II. During the war he lost both a brother and his father. After the war, he followed his late father’s lead and worked briefly with Nova Scotia Light and Power. In 1951, he set the course for the rest of his life. He accepted employment as a technician with the Herring Investigation Committee of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, working briefly out of St. Andrews, New Brunswick, before returning to Yarmouth. Shortly thereafter, on September 24th, he married Vera Mae Higby. Professionally, Ted covered the Tri-County area as Port Technician for the Fisheries Research Board from 1952 to 1976, when he became Department of Fisheries and Oceans Statistical Coordinator for Western Nova Scotia until his retirement in 1986. Over this period, he was instrumental in the development of the herring, and other fisheries in the region. His dedication to his job and extensive knowledge based on on-the-ground observation and listening, were legendary. He continued to keep an open ear and share valuable opinions on things fisheries related for many years after his retirement. He loved the many connections he made over the years with the fishing community of this region. Throughout his life, he worked with community groups on fisheries and environmental concerns. He also enjoyed playing anonymous Santa Claus to people in need at Christmas. On the family front, Ted and Vera raised four children, and instilled in them the value of hard work, the importance of being useful, honesty, the value of real life experience, community support, and respect and concern for the vulnerable. He is survived by his wife, Vera, sister Celia, brothers Kenneth, and Clinton (Betty), children John (Nguyen Thi Nhung), David (Judy), Stephen (Janet), and Celia (Rory Ryder), grandchildren Clark, Adam, Jennie, Emily, Steen, Aaron, and Lily, as well as his faithful dog, Max. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Ivan Steen, killed in World War II. Cremation has been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. There was no funeral at Ted’s request. Many thanks to Dr. David Webster and the staff on the fourth floor of Yarmouth Regional Hospital for their care during his last two months. Donations in Ted’s memory may be made at Sweeney’s Funeral Home to the Yarmouth Area Community Fund or charity of choice.
