Emerson Tobin Emerson Tobin

Born In: Sydney Mines

Passed in: North Sydney
Passed on: January 25th, 2015

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the sudden passing of our loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, James Emerson Tobin, on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at the Northside General Hospital, just seven weeks after the passing of our beloved mother Mary Theresa 'May' Tobin.
Born in Sydney Mines, Emerson was the son of the late James Pius and Sarah (Prince) Tobin. In his younger years he served overseas with the Canadian Army and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, North Sydney. He worked as a Stevedore with Marine Atlantic until his retirement and was a former Secretary Treasurer of the ILA. Emerson was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Emerson’s entire world revolved around his family. When his grandchildren were young, he would take them out into his backyard for some intense games of baseball. He taught them all how to hit the ball to the other side of the road for a “home run”. After these games, Emerson would always have a treat waiting for the kids inside the house. Even as young adults, his grandchildren couldn’t visit the house without hearing him ask, “do you want a chocolate bar?” You couldn’t leave without an armful of bars, chips, and cans of pop for all your friends. When Emerson was around his grandchildren and great grandchildren there was a spark in his eyes and it was as if the clock had turned back twenty years. He was always laughing and playing in a way that proved once and for all that age really is just a number. These visits made Emerson’s days and they are the special memories that his family will hold on to for the rest of their lives.
He will be sadly missed by his six children; three sons Lindsay (Barbara), Florence, Darrell (Marion), North Sydney, Shawn (Jenny), Bras d’Or and three daughters Arlene Tobin, North Sydney, Karen (Wayne) Viva, Summerside, Leanne (Ron) MacNeil, Florence. Also surviving are his eight grandchildren Nicholas, Mary Elizabeth, Patrick, Katelyn, Shane, Zachary, Brendan, Breanna and his three great-grandchildren Parker, Jesse and Joshua, his two brothers Frances 'Wanko' Tobin and Bernard Tobin and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary Theresa 'May' Tobin, December 8, 2014; his sisters Marguerite Bullied, Mary Gorman, Agnes Whalen, Martina MacDonald and brother Billy Tobin.
Visitation for Emerson will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating.

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.
