It with sadness and broken hearts we announce the passing of Melvin Prince, 76, of New Aberdeen. Melvin passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his devoted and loving family at his side.
Born in Gardiner Mines, Melvin was the son of the late Malcolm and Mary (Lidseter) Prince.
He was a former member of St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen. Melvin was a coal miner working in 18, 20 and 26 collieries retiring after 40 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed his bungalow at Mira Gut for many years and then moving on to camping at Mira Water Park. Melvin took great pleasure sitting on the deck and around the campfire with Steve, Joe and Johnnie. He also enjoyed Sunday drives and going to Tim’s with with Camey and Bev as well as his daily visits from Andre McMullin.
Melvin will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Jovita (Murphy); son, James (Danielle Dawson), Vancouver Island; daughter, Laurie (Jamie) Gove, Glace Bay; cherished grandchildren, Danielle Prince, B.C., Amanda and Trenton Gove, Glace Bay and great-grandson, Brantley Walsh B.C.; brother-in-law, Wilbert (Shirley) Murphy, Glace Bay; extended family Dan, Darlene and Daniel LeBlanc.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Melvin Jr.; grandson, Darcey; sisters, Melda Childley, Dorothy Burchell; brothers, Marshall, Malcolm, Gerald 'Buck', Thomas, twin, John Norbitt, Charlie and Gilbert.
Melvin was the last surviving of his immediate family.
Jovita and her family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses on 4th Floor and ICU and all the Doctors who were there for Melvin when he needed them.
In keeping with Melvin’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at 2 p.m. until the time of a celebration of life service to be held at 3 p.m. in Curry’s Glace Bay Funeral Home, 775 Main St., with Fr. Patrick O'Neill officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home.
Donations in Melvin’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
