Emily Ruth Devlin

Emily Ruth Devlin Emily Ruth Devlin

Born January 11, 1922, peacefully passed away on February 15, 2015 in the loving comforting presence of her sons, Bill and Bob.
Mom entered the world during an extreme snowstorm on the family farm in Prince Edward Island and was the sixth of eight children born to Artemas and Katherine Betts. She will be fondly remembered by many relatives and friends from the island. After teaching at the Nine Mile Creek one-room school on P.E.I., she joined the Air Force during WWII and was stationed at the training base in southern Alberta. Following her service, Ruth visited Vancouver and worked for a brief time at the Income Tax Department where she met her husband Budd Jarvis Devlin. Married in 1947 and for 50 wonderful years, they enjoyed a devoted and full life together making a home for their family in North Vancouver where she lived for 60 years. Ruth and Budd loved their many trips to the interior of BC fishing and camping, until Budd’s passing in 1997. As a loving Mom she selflessly devoted her time to her family and later to her grandchildren.
Ruth also assisted with many community services including volunteering for blood services at the Red Cross, delivering Meals on Wheels, and helping at the local kindergarten and skating club. An avid walker, Ruth could often be found on streets and trails with friends and walking dogs she was caring for. Ruth loved the earth and maintained a beautiful garden in her back yard with each plant having a special meaning linked to an important person in her life. Mom also loved the night sky and taught her sons an appreciation of the stars.
Ruth is survived by her sons, William Arthur (Anne-Marie) and Robert Harry (Drew Barbara), and grandsons, Alexander William Devlin and Michael James Devlin.
A special thank you to her extraordinary home care givers, the staff at Coastal Health Services who provided comfort and support over the last several years, and the Meals on Wheels staff who always had a kind word for her.
A celebration of her life will be held at a time in the near future. For those so wishing, memorial contributions in remembrance of Ruth may be made to the Canadian Blood Services.
Unassuming, caring and humble in life, she is loved without bounds and will be deeply missed.
