Anastasia Perehiniak

Born In: Krasna Ukraine

Passed in: Glace Bay
Passed on: March 2nd, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother and Baba (grandmother), Anastasia at the Glace Bay Hospital on Monday, March 2, 2015.
Anastasia was born in the Ukraine in the village, Krasna on Dec. 9, 1917. She was one of seven children born to Michalo and Anna (Stasiuk) Semianchyn. Her sister, Margaret Maydansky was the only one who also came to Canada. They have all since passed away.
Anastasia came to Canada by way of Pier 21, Halifax on June 25, 1930 to meet up with her father who came to work in the coal mines. He returned to the old country and left her with John Cherpak and his family as a mother’s helper.
She married John Perehiniak on May 7, 1932. He passed away on Oct. 20, 1954 as a result of a coal mining accident.
Anastasia is survived by her two daughters, Anna MacDonald, Dominion and Helen (Keith) Jenkins, Blackett’s Lake. Also surviving are six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, Joseph (Kim) MacDonald and daughter, Sharly, John (Charlene) MacDonald and sons, Mathew and Joshua, Brenda (John) Wamback and sons, Justin, Connor and Kyle, Wayne (Nicole) MacDonald and sons, Noah, Brody and Caden, Elisa Jenkins, Alanna (Dave) Jollimore and daughters, Sarena and Jillian.
Nastuna was a kind woman of many talents. She loved children and her family was her world. With no formal education, she learned to read and speak English on her own. She was an expert dress maker and made her own patterns for Anna and her friends at an early age. She picked up knitting, crocheting and embroidery and for many years donated her crafts to St. Eugene’s CWL.
Gardening was her passion and her walk-in flower garden with beautiful blooms and shrubs was the envy of the neighbourhood. In later years her big wish was to be able to go for a long walk in a big green field. Hopefully, God’s Garden of Paradise is there for her joy.
After her husband’s passing, she resided with daughters, Helen and then with Anna. She had been at Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay for about five years. She loved her doctor, Dr. Gordon Spencer, whose kindness and compassion has helped to keep her with us. We are so thankful for your care. God bless you!
Visitation will be held on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. to 10: 40 a.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The family will then proceed from the funeral home to Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport in time for the funeral mass at 11 a.m. with Fr. Dan Boudreau officiating. The reception will be held in the church hall. Interment will be at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
