Vernon Gerard Martell

Vernon Gerard Martell

Martell, Vernon Gerard - June 23, 1935 – March 4, 2015, Tatamagouche (formerly of West New Annan), father and grandfather, slipped away peacefully on March 4, 2015 with his loving son, Paul at his side in the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche. Born on June 23, 1935 in Halifax, to the late Wilfred and Lillia Martell. He is survived by his only child Paul, daughter-in-law Sherry Martell, The Falls; precious grandchildren Josephine, age 16, and Sebastian, age 14; adored sister Beula (Boo) Kemp-Meade, Halifax; brother Wayne (Nina) Martell, Lower Sackville; brother-in-law Bob (Libby) Crowe, Toney River; along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Joan (Crowe) Martell and brother, Valore Martell and sister-in-law Verna. A lifelong automobile enthusiastic at heart, he owned and operated Tatamagouche Auto Parts Napa for 21 years before selling the business and retiring in 2010. Everyone who knew Dad knew he loved everything about cars. From his time owning and operating Sea Breeze Raceway in Lawrencetown, near Halifax in the late 60s and early 70s, to a life-long career in parts and service in Tatamagouche. When Dad and Mom moved here in 1976 he worked at Langille Brother’s dealership as parts and service manager. He also held a number of jobs in the community including, bartending, maintenance at the North Shore Recreation Centre (NSRC), parts counterperson at Western Tire / UAP before buying the business in 1989. His quick wit and sense of humour will be missed by the many people he greeted from behind his bookrack on the parts counter. Dad was also a devoted fan of hockey and golf. Some of his greatest memories were of the time he played with the senior men’s hockey team at the NSRC and men’s night golf at the former Sunrise Golf Club in Brule. Other than the time he shared with Mom, his greatest love was for a flock of pigeons and mourning doves he gingerly cared for years at “the farm” in West New Annan. During the past three years he was a resident of Maplewood Manor, Tatamagouche, moving to the Willow Lodge Home for Special Care in December where he spent his final days under the watchful eyes of caring staff. Special thanks to the staff of both care homes and the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital for making Dad comfortable in his final days. At his request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sunny Brae Cemetery or the Colchester SPCA. A graveside service and celebration of Dad’s life will be held in late spring and announced in the May edition of The Light newspaper. Arrangements have been entrusted to Coulter‘s Funeral Home, P.O. Box 190 Tatamagouche, B0K 1V0. Online condolences can be forwarded to the family by visiting the funeral home website at: www.mmcfunerals.com
