Ian McGill

Ian McGill

With great sadness, we share with you our loss.
Ian Maurice McGill died April 24, 2015 in the peaceful environment of the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Ian was born March 20, 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland to the late Ronald and Elisabeth (Ingoldby) McGill. He came to Canada in the early sixties with his family, settling in Dartmouth.
Ian enjoyed a happy and carefree childhood. He attended King’s Collegiate, Windsor, Prince Andrew High, Dartmouth and graduated from Dartmouth Vocational School with the trade of industrial electrician.
While doing his apprenticeship with CNR in Moncton, he shared a random cab ride with a young student nurse and thus the story of Ian and Sherma began. They married in 1976, moving to Pictou County where he began working with Michelin Tire.
He thoroughly enjoyed his work and the many fine people he worked with. He had a good word for everyone and was well respected by his co-workers.
Ian accepted his diagnosis of cancer, but at the same time faced it with courage and fierce determination. It was not an easy journey by any stretch. He encountered many set backs along the way and never once complained. Ian guided us through this journey; he lead the way.
Always the athletic type, Ian thrived on physical activity, enjoying cycling, running, skiing and was most happy when swimming. He was well known throughout Masters Swimming in the province, having competed at many meets.
Ian also enjoyed good books, good scotch, fine wine and nice food. His fun side welcomed travel, rock concerts and blues fests. A motorcycle enthusiast, he owned a motorbike since the age of sixteen and loved running down the highway.
Ian is survived by his wife, Sherma (MacKay); brother Michael and wife Debbie, Shelburne; sister Susan and husband Ron Nugent, Calgary; sisters in law Sheila and husband, Donnelly Emery, Westville; Susan and partner, Dave Fulton, Halifax; four nieces, five nephews, two great nephews, and three great nieces.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Rosemary and his brother in law Robert Anderson.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. on April 27, 2015. Funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on April 28, both in McLaren’s Funeral Home, Pictou with Michael Simmons officiating. Reception to follow in the Pictou Legion. Family flowers only.
Donations can be made in Ian’s memory to the Palliative Care Society, Aberdeen Hospital or to a charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank Dr. Randy Burrill for his care and concern during the course of Ian’s illness, Dr. Gerry Farrell and his wonderful Palliative Team, Dr. Lori Wood and Dr. Scott Bagnell. Ian was always appreciative of the excellent care he received and felt he truly had the “A Team” looking after him.

We will all miss this most remarkable man.
