Joan Hunter, age 74 of Glace Bay and a former longtime resident of Donkin, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Mary (Lawrence) MacDonald.
Joan loved to sing and was involved in church choirs in both, Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay and St. Gregory’s Church, Donkin. She loved her family dearly and always saw the good in people and life. Her family described her as, ‘An Angel on Earth’. Joan enjoyed crafts, quilting and her newly discovered hobby, painting.
Joan is survived by one daughter, Anita Gilbert, Mt. Pearl, Nfld.; three sons, Paul (Xiujuan), Moncton, Gary (Charlene), Homeville, Dale, Victoria, B.C.; two sisters, Diane Keenan (Laverne), Ontario, Judy Moffatt (Danny), Glace Bay; two brothers, Robert (Linda), Ont., Gregory, Glace Bay and her brother-in-law, Peter Smith, Ontario.
She will also be sadly missed by her eight grandchildren, Christopher, Ashley, Kyle, John, Kenny, Jenna, Liam, Cameron, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, John in 1989; daughter, Karen in infancy; two sisters, Donna and Joyce.
Visitation is Thursday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Norman MacPhee is Friday, 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will be held after the reception in St. Gregory’s Cemetery, Donkin.
Memorial donations may be made to the Society for the Treatment of Autism.
