WALKER, Bruce George
July 16, 1927- May 9, 2015
It is with broken hearts that we pass on the sad news of the death of our beloved father, grandfather and uncle Bruce Walker on May 9, 2015 at the age of 87. He died peacefully surrounded by his daughters Diane Ross and Sherril Medd. In addition to his daughters he is survived by his son in laws Steve Ross and Terry Medd and his grandchildren Lindsay and Mackenzie. He was predeceased by his loving wife Margaret in 1978.
Bruce was born and raised in rural Saskatchewan and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 1949. As a new graduate he then moved to Edmonton and boarded with his future mother in law. Bruce and Margaret Lind were married in 1958. Bruce’s career in the oil and gas industry took the family to Saskatchewan, Ontario and Wisconsin before returning to Edmonton in 1969. Bruce and Margaret embraced their Scottish heritage early in their married life. Margaret started Diane and Sherril into a lifelong love of highland dancing and Bruce took up playing the bagpipes to keep up with his girls. Bruce’s membership in the Strathcona Legion Pipe Band in Edmonton brought him many close friendships and much joy. In addition to his tremendous pride for his daughters and grandchildren, he took great pride in participating in the Calgary Stampede parade with his pipe band.
Bruce had a great sense of humour, was usually the smartest and humblest person in the room and always maintained himself with a sense of duty, dignity and honour. He looked at things with an engineer’s curiosity; loved to take things apart and rebuild them better than new. He always said, “The media doesn’t give us the full story”, and he was right. Bruce was intellectual, creative and fiercely independent. Always the gentle soul, being in his presence was incredibly comfortable. He adapted and embraced the challenges of his life with great dignity. Bruce loved his family freely and unconditionally.
The family would like to thank the staff of Westview Lodge for their excellent care and for enhancing his life while he was there. Also, thank you to the nurses and physiotherapists on Unit 74 at the Rockyview Hospital for their kindness and competence. A special thank you to the ICU team for being there at the most difficult times.
There will be no memorial service. A private gathering of family will be decided at a future date.
Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.edenbrookcemetery.ca. Arrangements entrusted to EDEN BROOK FUNERAL HOME AND RECEPTION CENTRE, 24223 Township Road 242, Calgary AB, T3Z 3K2.
