Passed in: New Waterford
Passed on: May 21st, 2015

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Ronald Mark MacDonald, 71, of New Waterford on May 21, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Peter and Belle (Basker) MacDonald. Ronnie attended Mount Carmel School and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1965. He was a much loved teacher at Mount Carmel and Breton Education Centre until his retirement.
In his early years, Ronnie enjoyed playing basketball, soccer and baseball. He was a devout fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved to play chess and ran a chess club for students at B.E.C for several years. But he was best known for his passion and talent for the game of bridge, playing in tournaments throughout Canada and the U.S.A. and attained the status of Life Master in the game. Ronnie was a member of the Knights of Columbus, New Waterford.
All who knew Ronnie knew him as a kind, gentle and compassionate man. He was a man of few words, but always chose them wisely and with humour. He enjoyed the simple things in life, especially sitting on his deck in Mira watching the ocean, surrounded by family.
He is survived by his beloved, wife Jane (Miller); son, Peter (Debbie); daughter, Norma; grandchildren, Regan and Hugh; brother, Garfield (Marilyn); sisters, Jean Lestage (Gilles) and Bernadette Donovan (George) and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ronnie was predeceased by his brother, Byron and sisters, Goretti and Rose.
Many thanks to the nurses and staff of the New Waterford Hospital for their kindness and comfort. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association, B.E.C. Scholarship fund, or the charity of ones choice.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Members of the K of C will gather at the funeral home on Monday Night at 7 p.m. for prayers.
The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley is Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. Leonard’s Church followed by interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. The reception is at the K of C Hall, Plummer Avenue. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
‘Ronnie, you will be in our hearts and missed and loved forever.’
