Donald Ross MacLeod

Born: December 31st, 1927

Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: May 23rd, 2015

We are sad to announce the passing of Donald Ross MacLeod of Sydney N.S., on Saturday, May 23, 2015. Donnie passed away in his sleep after a pleasant day at Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney.
Born Dec. 31, 1927, the only son of Malcolm 'Mack' and Kathleen (Ross) MacLeod, Donnie grew up in Sydney, where he attended Sydney Academy and went on to work for many years in the general office at the Sydney Steel Plant. Donnie nurtured many interests in his 87 years. He played basketball at Sydney Academy and the YMCA and gave back to these communities as a referee for high school and junior college for many years. His sporting passion extended to decades as a top-notch tennis and badminton player, hunter, horseman and skier — and he always enjoyed a simple walk along the numerous scenic trails Cape Breton has to offer. Donnie was also a keen birdwatcher and lover of Cape Breton culture and a long time member of the St. Andrews United Church choir.
Donnie will be missed by his children, Isabelle, Ross (Beth) and Ian (Andrea), as well as his grandchildren Rory, Colin and Miranda.
He was predeceased by his sister Norma MacLeod, but is survived by his sister Eileen Norton.
Our family is also grateful for the friendship of Helen Ellsworth and the kindness of her daughter Pam. Lastly, Donnie’s family appreciates the care and service received at both Parkland Cape Breton and Harbourstone Enhanced Care for making his final days serene and enjoyable.
At Donnie’s request there will be no service or viewing at this time. The family will have a private internment at a later date.
Anyone wishing a memorial may make a donation in his memory to Sydney Academy or the Sydney YMCA.
“Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
and the hunter home from the hill.”
