Donald Stewart Cox

Cox, Donald Stewart – Truro - Dad, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, Donald Stewart Cox, aged 87 years, passed away May 21, 2015 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. His wisdom and kindness are dearly missed by family and friends. He was born on his family farm in Princeport, now Beaverbrook, the third and youngest child of Archibald Cox and Laura Susan (Bradley) along with sister, Ethel, and brother, Frank; he was predeceased by all. Don was a brilliant man who rapidly achieved grade school and college and then went on to work with the Department of Agriculture, retiring 30 years ago from his role as the Provincial Swine Specialist. His passion, dedication, and vision had him travel the world over in search of the best hogs to be used in breeding to achieve genetically superior swine. The Nova Scotia hog industry flourished five-fold under his twenty-three year stewardship. After his retirement, Don was inducted into the Agricultural Hall of Fame and he worked to establish the Agriculture Museum in Bible Hill. His first love was his work on the farm, and he established himself as a leader in the local agricultural industry in his early years through his involvement as a 4-H representative. He was a faithful member of St. James Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and continued giving support to his church family up until his death. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a Past Master. Don is survived by his wife Eleanor Katharine (Mac Donald); daughters, Dr. Katharine and Donna Cox; granddaughters, Dr. Jennifer MacDonald and Dr. Katharine MacDonald (John Liam Christie); great-granddaughters, Eleanor and Gwendolyn MacDonald, as well as several extended family. He is also survived by close friends, Tom Nunn and Roger de Grasse, and his adopted family, Grace and Jeff Simms; also by dear faithful neighbors, Anne White and Bill and Susan Lycan. Both puppies, Stewart and Susan, brought him great joy and peace. Cremation and service to be scheduled. Donations in Don's memory may be made to St. James Presbyterian Church or the Colchester Community Workshop. Arrangements entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro where on-line condolences may be made at www.ColchesterCommunity.com To God the Glory! Soli Deo Gloria.
