It is with sadness that the family of Joseph A. MacDonald announces his passing at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing on Thursday, May 28, 2015 with his family by his side, after a period of declining health. He was born in Ingonish, Cape Breton on November 9, 1920 to the late Robert and Clara (Young) McDonald. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Joe was a veteran of World War II having served in England, France and Holland with the Sixth Canadian Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers. Following his discharge from active service he returned to the military in 1947 retiring in 1969 with the rank of Warrant Officer. He then entered the Federal Civil Service, first with the Department of Agriculture in Moncton and then with the Department of Forestry in Fredericton from which he retired in 1985. An avid reader he enjoyed staying up on current affairs until recent months. He was an avid golfer until 2007 when a hip injury caused him to retire his clubs.
He was predeceased by wife Edna and daughter Bonnie, brothers James and Clayton.
He is survived by his son Stuart and wife Eileen (Garnett) of Rothesay, daughter Kimberly Prosser and husband Jim of Lenexa, Kansas. Grandchildren Heather Graham (Cory) of Rothesay, Lauren MacDonald (Ben) of Kugluktuk, Nunavut and Scott MacDonald of Rothesay. Janelle (Curtis) and Kyle Prosser of Lenexa, Kansas along with several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dear friend and companion Mary Rex of Ridgewood Veterans Wing.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Victory Lane and Liberty Lane at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing for the excellent care and compassion extended to Dad over the last two years. Your kindness will not be forgotten. The appreciation of the family is also extended to Sharon Randell, friend and personal trainer who helped Dad find a new purpose in life.
Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home 100 Waterloo Street (634-1965) with visiting on Sunday May 31, 2015 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A service to a Veteran will take place at 7:00pm from Fitzpatrick’s Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Monday at 12:10pm followed by interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Donations to the Alzheimers Society or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. www.fitzpatrickfh.com.
