Bonnie Jane Black

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Bonnie Jane Black, 69, of Dartmouth, NS on May 29 in the Halifax Infirmary after a lengthy and difficult battle with multiple health issues.
Born in New Glasgow, NS, she was the daughter of the late James and Edna (MacKay) Black.
Bonnie will be sorely missed by her loving husband and best friend of 21 years, JW (Bill) Thorpe. She is also survived by sister Beverly (Don) McGuigan, brother James (Barb) Black, step-daughters Catherine Thorpe and Kimberly Irwin, five step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
Bonnie was born and raised in New Glasgow, where she graduated from New Glasgow High School and Maritime Business School. After a 30+ year career in various departments of the federal government, she retired in 1998 as a manager in the Atlantic Region of Public Works and Government Services Canada. Bonnie loved music and Scottish Country Dancing, and was very proud of her Scottish heritage. She sang in the choir at Grace United Church, Dartmouth and with the Dartmouth Choral Society. She was an avid reader, particularly of books dealing with spirituality issues but also of mystery novels. Bonnie’s family and friends were a very important part of her life, particularly the “gang” of five fellow retirees from the federal government. Her beautiful Yorkshire Terrier, Bailey, was a great source of joy and comfort, particularly in the past few years of her declining health.
Arrangements entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Cremation has taken place, and there will be no visitation by request of the family.
Online condolences may be directed to the family at atlanticfuneralhomes.com.
The funeral service will be held at Grace United Church, 70 King St., Dartmouth, at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2015 with reception to follow in the Church. Interment will be at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia, the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses on 7.2, in particular, Halifax Infirmary, for the care and compassion given to Bonnie during her lengthy hospital stay.
