Born In: Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada

Passed in: United States, Canada
Passed on: February 6th, 2015

BURBINE, Mrs. Jeanette (nee Turpin) - Chatham, Massachusetts, USA., born January, 1918 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2014, just two weeks after enjoying a family gathering to celebrate her 96th birthday. Jeanette immigrated to the United States in 1940 with her husband Joseph H. Burbine (formerly Babin), eventually settling in Massachusetts. She had many fond memories of her multiple trips "back home" to visit with family members, frequently staying with her loving sister Marguerite Guye or her niece, Jane Strange. Jeanette's last visit to N.S. was in 2008, accompanied by her children.
Jeanette lived an active and self-sufficient life, maintaining her own home in Chatham until one year before her passing. She always had a strong work ethic, which helped in the raising of her three children while her husband was away working on the commercial fishing trawlers out of Boston during the season, and fished on his own boat, the Jeanette, out of Chatham in the summer months. In the late 1950's, Jeanette managed a small pharmacy in Chatham, having worked her way up from cashier to store manager. In the 1960's, she graduated from a Certified Nurses Aid program and began a career in private duty nursing, working in both nursing homes and private homes. She retired at the age of 77.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1987; her parents, Melvin and Alberta (Stuart) Turpin, and her 9 siblings. She is survived by her three children, Madlyn B. Monchamp, of Santa Barbara, California; Joseph “Eli” Burbine of Melbourne, Florida and Morris Island, N.S.; and Judith B. Sweeney, of Dennis, Massachusetts; her two beloved grandchildren, Amanda J. Monchamp, Esq., of Oakland, California, and Ryan J. Sweeney, Esq, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and her two great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Nathaniel Monchamp-Marsh.
A gravesite interment of Jeanette's ashes will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Shelburne, NS on Monday, August 3, 2015 at 12:30.
