St. John’s — Howard Horatius Coish, 82, died Friday, July 24, 2015 at the Miller Centre in St. John’s following a brief illness.

Loving husband of his wife Mary (deceased in 2009). Devoted father of his sons, Peter and Philip. He also leaves behind daughter in-law Catherine and granddaughters Lily and Olivia, brothers Garfield, Wes, and Harvey, and sisters-in-law Audrey, Margaret, Marina, Gloria and Flossie. He is predeceased by his brothers Roland and Raymond.

A son of Fogo, Howard joined Steers Limited in Lewisporte before finishing high school in 1950 (that same year he went on to complete his high school exams with honours). He worked for Steers for 28 years, the last 10 of he served as the general manager. In 1979, he joined the Workers’ Compensation Commission in St. John’s, where he worked until retirement in 1993. He met his wife, Mary Best, as a teenager on Fogo Island and they were married in 1956 at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Fogo.

Howard was a lifelong student of history, and possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of that of Newfoundland and Admiral Nelson (his namesake) in particular. No matter how much his sons tried, they could never stump him with a question relating to Newfoundland or British history.

A funeral service was be held at St. Matthews United Church in Lewisporte on Thursday, July 30 at 2 pm. Donations may be made to the Health Care Foundation in St. John's.
