Florene Evelyn, (Higginbotham) Hebb

Florene Evelyn, (Higginbotham) Hebb

It is with heartfelt sadness that we say goodbye to our dear mother, our grandmother, aunt and friend. Florene Hebb, a kind and gentle true lady, with a contagious smile and hearty laugh that would light up any room.
Indeed a beautiful person both inside and out, she will be missed by all who knew her.
Born on May 25 1933 in Montague P.E.I., one of three children, Florene enjoyed growing up in Montague Prince Edward Island, and always considered herself to be an" Islander".
After graduating high school she and her sister, Laura, left their beautiful Island to pursue careers in nursing, and so began a life full of caring and compassion.
There was nobody better suited to be a nurse than our mother. Her unselfish nature and a genuine concern for others is what made her so special in every way.
Florene began her career at the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax, where she discovered immediately her love of all children. She adored her “Grace” babies, and had that special touch - she could pick up a crying baby and have them happy in her arms minutes later.
At a dance at the Jubilee Boat Club she met Thomas Hebb, they married and started raising a family immediately. She created a happy home, loved being a mother, and as well selflessly cared for Tom's father, our "papa" in his Waterloo street home until his passing at the age of 98, 26 years later.
She also found time to be an active member of the IODE, The Insurance Women’s Association, enjoyed her ladies bridge club and loved working part time at Dr. Helen Hunter’s pediatric practice.
After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes she became actively involved with the Diabetic Association working in drug trials and with fund raising.
Her greatest joy was her family, and she delighted in spending time with her beloved grandchildren whom she adored. There were many hours spent reading, singing songs, having sleepovers, and just enjoying the simple pleasures of being a wonderful grandmother.
Florene was predeceased by her father Harry Higginbotham, mother Annie (Richards) Higginbotham, her dear sister Laura (Jardine), brother Harry (Junior) Higginbotham and her husband Thomas Hebb.
She is survived by her children, David Hebb (Pam Auld) and Cyndy Macleod (Bruce) as well as grandchildren, Geoffrey, Laura, Sara, Thomas ,Michael as well as many nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating Florene’s life will take place at Snow’s Funeral Home ,339 Lacewood Dr. at 2 p.m. Thursday July 30.
We wish to thank our extended family at the Berkeley for their care, compassion and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or the Alzheimer’s Society.
