Dorothy "Dot" Muriel (Sheppard) Mentis

Mentis, Dorothy “Dot” Muriel (Sheppard) passed away suddenly July 20, 2015 with family at her side. Born October 19, 1918, she was the daughter of the late John and Hilda (Martin) Mentis. Dot was a former member of the St. Philip’s African Orthodox Church in Sydney and a member of Union United Church in Montreal, Quebec. Dot loved life and enjoyed music and dancing. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially with her nieces Avis and Verna. With a passion for knitting, Dot spent countless hours making beautiful sweater sets for family, friends and her dolls. Dot grew up in Truro and later moved to Montreal where she resided for 50 years before moving home to live with her nieces Brenda and her “son” Cordell. Dot shared a maternal bond with “her son” Cordell (Louella) Paris and her niece Brenda Mentis. She was known as “Nana Dot” to Chantal Paris, Shakara Paris, Keisha Paris-Clyke, Dionne (Jude) Paris-Clyke and Mark Paris; godson, Shane Paris and great nephew, Derek Paris who always made Aunt Dot laugh. Dot was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by brother, Robert Mentis; sisters, Marie “Weenie” Tynes, Grace Halfkenny and a brother in infancy, John Henry Mentis; nephews, Robert “Cook” Mentis and Maxie Jacklyn; nieces, Lenora “Sissy” Mentis, Francis Tynes and best friend Greta Parris. A special thanks to niece, Doris (Albert) Paris and nephew Burton (Ruth) Mentis for their constant support to Dot. Also, thank you to her family and landlord in Montreal for their care and support over the years. Cremation as taken place. A memorial service will be held on August 6, 2015 at 11:00 am in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Pastor Brian O. Johnston officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service starting at 10:00 am until time of the service. Interment in Robie Street Cemetery with reception to follow in the funeral home.
