Passed on: August 2nd, 2015

With broken hearts we announce the passing of Claudia Marie Ivey of North Sydney, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015 at home.
Claudia was born on May 6, 1939 in Glace Bay. She was the daughter of Michael and Muriel Morrison of North Sydney.
She worked in retail for many years until she opened her own business, Claudia’s Floral Design, which she operated in North Sydney until her retirement.
Claudia was well known for her tough exterior “give it to me straight” was one of her favourite sayings. In 1957, she was the only girl in a group of seven friends that could boast of swimming across the harbour from North Sydney to Sydney. She had many hobbies, including gardening, sewing, oil painting, and in quiet moments, her crossword puzzles. What she enjoyed most were the camping trips her and Ron took, and spending time laughing and carrying on with friends and family. She especially loved her luncheons with her cousins and her high school friends. If you were lucky, her alter ego “Dolly Darts” might make an appearance. She was an associate member of Branch 19, Royal Canadian Legion, and, over the years served in various executive roles with the legion and the ladies auxiliary. She spent countless hours there preparing meals, working on the Poppy Campaign, and assisting with Remembrance Day events. She was proud of her service to veterans. She lived a full life on her own terms, happy to make the most of each day as it came.
She is survived by her husband, Ron Ivey; two daughters, Shelly Hatcher (Phil), North Sydney, Jenny Tobin (Shaun), Little Bras d’Or; one son, Tim, Thorold, Ont. She is also survived by grandchildren, Rochelle Thiel (Craig), Port Morien, Stacey Hatcher (Jeff Clevett), Moncton N.B., Shawn Miehm (Lisa), Miscouche P.E.I. and Shana Caron (Steve), St. Catharines, Ont., and three great-grandchildren, Emily, Evan and Lilly. She is also survived by a sister, Paula Campbell, North Sydney; brothers, Keith Brewer (Dorina) Dieppe, N.B., David Mason(Yvonne), Rotoura, NZ, Bruce Emmerson, Kitchener, Ont. and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Patrick Miehm; birth parents, Joseph MacCormick and Mary Emmerson; her adoptive parents, Michael and Muriel Morrison; her stepfather, Ted Emmerson, and her brothers, Don Emmerson and Murray Morrison.
It was Claudia’s wish that there be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank Cape Breton Regional Palliative Care Service, Cathy MacMillan RN, Dr. Patrick O’Grady and VON Cape Breton for their care and support during her illness. Heartfelt thanks to her wonderful neighbors, Georgie, Mabel and Barb, who were always there for her.
To honour her memory, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation- Cancer Patient Care Fund.

by Unknown Author
You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she’s gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she’d want:
smile,
open your eyes,
love
and go on.
