Helen Marie (Johnson) Phillips, 85, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2015, surrounded by her children, at Williams Country Homes in Hilden, NS. Born in Truro on July 11, 1930, Helen was the youngest child of the late Albert and Josie (Wynn) Johnson. Helen was a proud career woman. Having studied at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, she became the first Registered Laboratory Technologist (RT) in Colchester County. She was Assistant Chief and Chief Laboratory Technologist at Colchester Regional Hospital before retiring in 1990. Helen married her high school sweetheart, Bruce Phillips, in 1952 and they enjoyed a happy life together in Truro until his passing in 1994. She played the piano beautifully, bowled and played bridge with her friends, and loved watching the sunsets at her cottage at Brule Beach. She was an avid reader and companion to many pets through the years. Besides her husband and parents, Helen was predeceased by her brother, Leo Johnson (Marg); and her sister, Marge Thomas (William). She leaves behind four children, Pamela Sanford (William), Porter’s Lake, Craig Phillips (Jo-Ann), Truro, Patricia Stephens (Donald), Ottawa, and David Phillips (Ryan MacLean), Halifax. In addition to her children, Helen is survived by eight cherished grandchildren; Patricia Sanford (Adam Horne), Geoffrey Sanford (Amanda), Joseph Sanford (Brittany), Brenna Phillips, Ian Phillips (Sara Landry), Bryan Stephens, Ross Stephens, and Scott Stephens; and five great-grandchildren; Abigail, Elliott, Maximilian, Noah, and Sullivan. Helen’s family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to her caregivers at Williams Country Homes, whose extraordinary kindness and dedication made Helen comfortable and brought a smile to her face in her final years. A reception/visitation to remember Helen and celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 1:00pm at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, NS. This will be followed by a private family burial service at Terrace Hill Cemetery, Truro. Family flowers only. Donations will be gratefully received by the Colchester Regional Hospital Auxiliary and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
