It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my mom Leona Milley on Aug. 26, 2015, at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Born in Glace Bay on Aug. 25, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Mary (Aucoin) Reid.
My mom grew up and lived most of her life on Steele’s Hill all on the same street as her parents, brothers and sister.
Early in her life she had entered the sisters of St Martha’s in Antigonish where she had completed her nursing training as an RNA. Soon after she would return to Cape Breton to practise her nursing career at the Point Edward Hospital where she would later meet and fall in love with the love of her life my father, Anthony 'Tony' Milley, and they would soon marry and she would be the proud and loving mother of her two sons, Dana and Shawn.
She had taken on many roles in the community, one that still stands out in most people’s minds today is the role she had as the director of the Passchendaele Police Girls Club from 1987-89. Mom made sure
that everything was about the kids.
Of all of the things mom was passionate about the one true thing she was the most proud of was being a grandmother, especially to her granddaughter Dani, who she always referred to as the “daughter she never had.”
Like two peas in a pod they both shared the same qualities of their kindness to others and their ability to light up any room they walked into.
There was never an event that she would not attend for her grandchildren, from cold rinks to hours-long dance recitals, you could always look up and see "Nana" beaming with pride. Mom loved get-togethers and family meals especially when followed by a game of crib. No matter how hard we tried
we were no competition for her and Dad.
Mom and Dad loved to take long drives, something she enjoyed. Especially stopping for a coffee and chatting with the many friends they made over the years. She just had the ability to make friends wherever she went and she surely will be sadly missed by them all.
She is survived by her husband, Tony; her son, Dana (Tricia) and their children, Dani, Jackson and Austin, Glace Bay; her son, Shawn and his children Marissa and Brandon, Ont. Her brothers, John (Winnie),
Michael (Debbie), Vernon (Linda), Sister Vangie O’Neill; sister-in-law, Girlie Reid; brothers-in-law, Dick (Ena), New York, Ken (Judy), New Brunswick.
She was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Mary Reid; brother, Tommy; brother-in-law, Joe O’Neill; father-in-law, Chesley; mother-in-law, Gladys; sister-in-law, Madonna; brothers-in-law, Paul and Louis.
In keeping with my mother’s wishes there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of Curry's Glace Bay Funeral Home, 775 Main St. A celebration of mom’s life will be held at our home for family and friends on Monday, Aug. 31st, from 6-8 p.m., 64 Marconi Towers Rd., Tower Road.
In my final words I just want to thank her for all the great memories. You will be always in my heart.
