Thurston, Gary Cameron

Amherst, age 69, passed away on August 28, 2015 at the Cumberland Regional Health Centre. Born in Yarmouth, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Betty (Gillis) Thurston. He retired from the federal public service, having held a variety of management positions during his 30-year career. He volunteered with a large number of charitable organizations and fundraisers. His many years in Scouting were especially enjoyed, receiving the Silver Wolf from Scouts Canada for service of the most outstanding character. His favorite hobbies were flower gardening and fly-fishing. He was also an avid sports fan. He thoroughly enjoyed pulling pranks, tasteful jokes and laughter. Gary was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte (Warwick). He is survived by his much loved partner Helen, brothers Greg, Saint John, Harry (Cathy), Tidnish and son, Craig (Nancy), Bible Hill. His six grandchildren, Graham, Laura, Akeesha, Hannah, Wynsten, and Daxton, were his greatest source of pride and joy. The family would like to thank Dr. Krzysztof Bienkowski, the staff at the George Dumont oncology centre, along with the Cumberland Health Centre palliative care team for their devotion and support during Gary’s illness. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Campbell’s Funeral Home (902-667-9906), 98 Church St., Amherst. Visitation will be held on Monday August 31st from 2-4 and 6-8. A celebration of life will be held at Campbell’s Funeral Home on Tuesday September 1st and 11:00 a.m., with a private family internment to follow at the Amherst Cemetery.
