Herbert (Bert) Russell King passed away on August 27, 2015 at the age of 101, leaving behind a long, extraordinary legacy. He was born in Abernethy, Saskatchewan on June 29, 1914. Bert is predeceased by his wife Margaret, son Richard, and daughter Anita. He is survived by 4 children, Ted (Kerry), Russell (Jennifer), Elizabeth (Andrew) Reid, Lois Salter; 15 grandchildren Julie, Scott, Jason, Justin, Christina, Chris, Ralla, Stuart, Margaret, Jennifer, Christopher, Rebecca, Audrey, Wendy, Angela; as well as several great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and relatives. Bert taught throughout southern Saskatchewan then commenced work with the Moose Jaw Post Office from May 1940 until his retirement in 1975. He married the love of his life, Margaret Edwards, on December 24, 1940 at St. Andrews Church. With WWII raging, he began officer training with the RCAF in 1941 and served in England, North Africa, and Italy. His wartime experiences were published in the book “Following in the Line of Duty”. After the war, Bert continued in the RCAF reserves for the next 10 years. Bert was known for his sense of humour, ingenuity, and bravery. He was an avid outdoors man who took pleasure in camping, swimming, fishing, hunting, boating, golf, and gardening. Bert travelled extensively and enjoyed photography, painting, lapidary, carpentry, computers, dancing, and especially music. He had an exceptional memory for lyrics right up to the end of his life. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and lovingly cared for his wife up to her death 8 years ago. As Bert put it, “I’ve had a good life.” We will all miss him. The Celebration of Bert’s Life will be held on Friday, September 4, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in the W.J. Jones & Son Chapel, Moose Jaw. Herbert E. (Ted) King will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The National Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation, 30 Concourse Gate, Unit 27, Ottawa, ON K2E 7V7.
