It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Chesley Llewelyn Carter, age 92, loving father, grandfather, great-grand and great-great grandfather, brother and uncle, on Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Ship Island, Newfoundland on November 3, 1922, Ches was the son of the late James and Maude (Keeping) Carter. Ches was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Merchant Marines. He was employed for many years with CN Railway, CN Marine and later with Marine Atlantic, where in 1975 Ches left the vessels and joined Marine Engineering in maintenance until his retirement in 1983. He was a faithful member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney, where he sang in the church choir, was a member of the Married Couples Association and Brotherhood of Anglican Churchmen. Ches could always be found in the kitchen cooking for church functions and for many years at Camp Bretondean. Ches was also a member of the Royal Albert Masonic Lodge, the Lodge of Perfection, Grand Imperial Conclave of Canada, the Order of Eastern Star, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry & Rose Croix and Philae Temple of Shriners. In 1994 Ches was awarded the "Volunteer of the Year" for North Sydney for over 40 years of volunteering in his community. Ches is survived by his children Jim (Paula) Carter, Falmouth, Chesley Jr. (Dale) Carter, Dartmouth, Lillian Holland (Gerald Crewe), North Sydney and Rosalind (Roland) Guy, North Sydney, his two brothers Clayton (Elizabeth), North Sydney and Eric (Anne), Bay Roberts, his 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Ches was predeceased by his wife Jean (Edwards) Carter in 2013, his son-in-law Barry Holland, his great-granddaughter Kimber Yorke, his sisters Alice Oakley and Eva Goulding. Visitation for Ches will be held Tuesday (today) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Debbie Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. A Masonic service will be held in the funeral home Tuesday evening at 6:45 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church Fund or a charity of choice.
